Unity Bank was proud to sponsor and attend the Canterbury Bankstown Chamber of Commerce Gala dinner. Every year, a charity is chosen, and a live and silent auction are conducted on the evening. All the funds raised go to the chosen charity.

This year, the CBCC agreed to nominate the Connie Johnson research lab at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, which leads the field in research of medical genomics, cancer, diseases of immunity and inflammation, amongst many others.

Unity Bank’s own Renee Chahine delivered an inspirational speech on the evening, which was attended by NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet and Prof Elgene Lim, who is a medical oncologist and medical researcher with the Institute.

Ms Chahine, a breast cancer survivor, shared her story to highlight the importance of Garvan’s work.

“Fortunately, my story is a story of hope thanks to medical research,” Ms Chahine said and went on to thank Unity Bank for their support throughout her journey and with the fundraiser.

Breast cancer touches one in seven women in Australia and Prof Lim and his term do critical work in prevention, finding a cure and improving patient outcomes.

Artist, Ken Tucker, painted live during the evening, raising $37,000 for the sale of his painting. Overall, the CBCC managed to raise approximately $50,000 which was a humbling and an overwhelming outcome for the charity.

Ms Chahine said she hoped there would be more life-changing stories for cancer sufferers.

“Let’s continue changing stories like mine into stories of hope, and let’s give other women another precious chance of life.”
